On, Off, Down

The book is on the table - 1

--- On, Off, Down ---

Olá:

Hoje não é o livro que está sobre a mesa, é uma bola.  Bolas rolam, caem,  e  entre “off” e “down” surgem por vezes dúvidas, uma vez que down  também é “para baixo” em seus sentidos básicos.

(desenho): ---  1. There is a ball on the table.
(desenho): ---  2. The ball rolled down the table / The ball rolled down.
(desenho): ---  3. It fell off the table / It fell off / It rolled all the way down the table and fell off.

1. Há uma bola sobre a mesa.
2. A bola rolou pela mesa / A bola foi rolando.
3. Ela caiu da mesa / Ela caiu / Ela rolou por toda a extensão da mesa e caiu.

ON, DOWN e OFF
Algo que está ON numa superfície, está sobre ela, tocando-a; se vai rolando pela superfície está indo DOWN (ao longo)  e se cai houve um OFF.

Outro exemplo muito comum de down nesse sentido:  Go down the street  = “siga adiante, vá
descendo a rua”; down novamente significando along, não significa obrigatoriamente uma rua em declive.

OFF no significado de soltar, desligar, cair, desprender, torna fácil a compreensão de The poster came off the wall = o poster soltou-se / caiu da parede.

DOWN / UP (e outras) podem ser usadas para dar ênfase a verbos ou, com verbos curtos, para possibilitar melhor “caimento”, dar melodia à fala, como em “stand up” e “sit down”.

- The poster fell right down on my head! = O poster despencou / caiu bem em cima da minha cabeça! (Sem nenhuma ênfase: The poster fell on my head).

 DOWN x OFF em VEÍCULOS
Apesar de aprendermos que tratando-se de veículos grandes, subir/descer = get on / get off, surge por vezes a pergunta:
- “Não é o mesmo que: “ GET DOWN the bus / the subway?”

- Não. Usa-se get off  para “descer de meios de transporte, construções, atrações de parque, etc., nos quais é preciso subir, montar, escalar”.

Get down, entre outros, significa também “abaixar, agachar, deitar-se”,
além de ser variação para Duck! (abaixar-se para proteger-se).

Isso faz com que soe estranho ou cômico se, estando dentro de metrô ou de ônibus, alguém disser a quem o acompanha: “let’s get down here” ou “we must get down at the next station”.

Sobre os livros / About the books

333, misturando
TRADE FOR com SUBSTITUTE FOR em letra de canção da Madonna.

The above books were written for non-linguist Brazilian students who study English.
They are about the little words usually referred to as prepositions.

The focus was on the meanings carried by them: not only as pure prepositions or adverbial particles,
but also when used as adjectives, verbs, prefixes, conjunctions, etc. The grammatical nomenclature was avoided as much as possible while the very basic terms are presented and simply explained in
a few pages of the first book -“Preposições e Partículas Adverbiais em Inglês”.

The site, in Portuguese, was developed mainly to assist the readers in finding different topics
within the content, as follows:

It appears to me that the main feature is the

Index from Portuguese into English

The examples (in AllTogether) can be used for vocabulary expansion and fluency classes.  Lists were created to organize a number of entries into different reoccurring themes. Examples of thematic index entries include: Brazil, bullying, business, doctors, food, jobs. They are intended to help both teachers and students in finding examples containing terms related to the themes.
Using the Indice Remissivo:
The initial page explains how to find the titles. First thing to do in Índice Remissivo is to click on the first letter of the thematic index, which total 27, as follows:

Aposentado (Retiree)
Assinar (Signing)
Brasil
Bullying
Business
Cachorros (Dogs)
Comida/Cozinha (Food/Kitchen)
Contador (Accountant)
Dr/Dentista/Médico/Hospital
Escola/Ensino/Estudos (School/Teaching/Studies)
Estágio (Internship, Trainees)
Filhos (Children)
Gato (Cat)
Gordura (Fat)
Imigrante (Immigrant)
Impostos (Taxes)
Internet
Jogadores de Futebol (Soccer Players)
Polícia (Police)
Política (Politics)
Portugal
Prefeitura (City Hall)
Professores (Teachers)
Religião (Religion)
Roupas (Garments)
Recursos Humanos (Human Resources)
Trabalho (Work, Jobs)

On the alphabetical rows click on  A  for Aposentado, on  B  for Business, etc.
You’ll be sent to pages A or B, etc.
Just scroll down the words and you will find the desired thematic index.
The approach is from Portuguese.
For example, under Business:

Faixa Econômica 229 On a budget means that on page 229 under the entry “On a budget”
the example contains the term “faixa econômica”.

On a budget                                                   Com economia, com limite orçamentário,
dentro de uma faixa de gastos

- People on a budget rent their cars from             As pessoas com limite orçamentário
the lowest tier.                                              alugam carros da faixa mais econômica.
